Why do we give our time? When we started coming to Holy Family, we were asked to give our time, talent, and treasure. Eighteen years ago, we were still unsure of what our talent was, we certainly didn’t have much treasure to give, but we could spare some time. Little did we know that some time would turn into more time, and more time, would turn into treasure. Not the monetary kind of treasure but the treasure that we can hold onto the rest of our lives. The friendships we have gained, the lives we have impacted, and the memories we have made, are far greater treasures than we could have ever gotten by giving money. Yes money is important, and the church needs it, but they also need people to give their time. People like us, newlyweds, then a family with small children, now teenagers. The church needs all of us. Yes our lives have gotten busier as the kids have grown, but we have made the time to give back. Our kids see the value in the time we give and they could not have learned that by just giving money. We had to show them, through our volunteering, that time, talent, and treasure comes in many forms and can look different for each family. We will always treasure our time we have given and it has truly made us a Holy Family.

Even though I was taught many important life lessons as a child, lessons like being honest and working hard, it wasn’t until I met Matt and his family that I understood the true meaning and importance of stewardship. Early on in our relationship and throughout our marriage, I’ve witnessed his family cheerfully serve others and their community with their time, financial resources, and talent. Whether it was making sandwiches for the homeless men at St. Martin De Porres Shelter, providing accounting services to Sacred Heart Radio in Seattle, or supporting the efforts of March for Life, the Russell’s continue to give willfully. I’ve also been witness to the fullness and joy in their life and knew that was what Matt and I wanted for our growing family.
We moved to Portland nine years ago and in 2017, we joined Holy Family as parishioners. Just last year, our girls transitioned to Holy Family Catholic School and we’ve been overwhelmed by the vibrancy and richness of this community! I quickly came to understand that this is where I wanted to devote my time and energy.
Like most families these days, we are busy, with three little girls and a demanding career, little time, let alone energy, is left for other pursuits. However, incorporating the act of giving back to others, as a habit, woven into the fabric of our family life, begins with setting the example for our children. Our daughters witness how Matt and I contribute in the classroom, tithe, volunteer at church and school functions, and help those less fortunate. Finding time for stewardship in and around the Holy Family community allows us to live our values while spreading compassion and joy in a world that is in great need of both.
